Old Bones, May 5 1998...
While our Mexican neighbors celebrate their revolution of independence ragged pup records has lots to bark about with the release of 3 (almost 4) new albums. Wyckham Porteous's new album "In This World" raced into record stores and radio stations across Canada on March 15. Right from the start the reviewers and everyone else who listened to the album were impressed:
"An excellent album and easily the best record to come from the West Coast..."
Tom Harrison.... The Province
"In This World is a powerful and evocative album..."
Tony Montague...Georgia Straight
"In This World is a soaring, break-through work of art...."
Ross Crockford... Monday Magazine
Radio also jumped in with early and strong support from both regional and network CBC and rock radio stations like 100.3 the Q and Vancouver's The Fox and CFMM in Dawson Creek. The momentum is building in the west now and even stations in Ontario are beginning to sit up and taking notice.
Well attended album release parties were held at the Railway Club in Vancouver and at C'est What in Toronto and at the office of Pacific Music Marketing in Victoria. While in Toronto Wyckham's band was augmented by a new, and we hope regular, drummer Michelle Josef.
There were lots of rockets and roman candles going off on May 1 as Luann Kowalek's "Late Night Heroes" and Bill Bourne's "Sally's Dream" saw their official national release. CKUA and CBC in Edmonton and Vancouver along with Victoria's Q-100.3 were the trend setters at radio. These albums will be available in stores across Canada by May 10 through our distributor Mike Peters (Pacific Music/'nuff Entertainment). The quality of both of these superlative albums is sure to attract lots of press, radio and fan attention.
Nelson, B.C. is home to Myk Gordon, the newest member of the ragged pup pack. Myk's second album "Lonely" is due to be released by June 1. "Lonely" was recorded (Mark Fournier) and mastered (the Lacquer Channel) in Toronto, the artwork (Wes Borg of Three Dead Trolls) and photography (Anne Gillespie) was done in Edmonton and the post production (Graphic Knights) in Victoria. Now that sounds like a truly Canadian album to me. Myk's self-released 1st album is titled "Seventh Candle".
Ragged pup is also building an addition to the kennel and with the help of Web Master Sean Roberts we will soon have our web page posted so you net nuts will be able to dig up the latest tidbits or old bones about everything from the home kennel to ragged pup's new releases and new artists.
A Personal Growl: I'm sure everyone noticed that the CRTC is beefing up the Can Con rules which are intended to help Canadian artist and labels. My thoughts about this are that the best possible way to support Canadian talent is for every one of us to go out and purchase some of the many great records that are made by Canadian artists on Canadian labels like ragged pup records.
